In honor of this year’s Black History Month national theme, “African Americans and the Arts“, join the French-American Foundation—United States on January 29th, 2024 for a conversation with NORME founder Binkady-Emmanuel Hié and singer-songwriter China Moses (Young Leader ’13) on diversity and inclusion in the arts in a transatlantic context.
Binkady-Emmanuel Hié left his law career to work as a fundraiser at the Paris Opera. Following the Black Lives Matter movement, he co-wrote a manifesto that addressed racial issues both within the Opera and echoing throughout institutions worldwide. In 2021, he founded NORME, a consulting agency that works to increase minority representation across different sectors in France, including business and arts & culture. NORME provides management services for artists – such as ballet dancer Guillaume Diop – and develops creative projects and collaborations among creatives. His first book, VISIBLES!, highlights leading Black figures throughout French history (published October 2023).
China Moses, an acclaimed singer, songwriter, and producer, defies categorization in her music, drawing inspiration from the expansive lineage of Black American music. Founder of MadeInChina in 2008, she has released seven leader albums, including “This One’s for Dinah,” “Crazy Blues,” “Nightintales,” and “& the Vibe Tribe EP.” As a host-producer on TSF Jazz (France) and Jazz FM (UK), she is one of the few women of color with multiple radio shows across European and UK airwaves. With a global presence, China has performed in over 800 shows across six continents and graced prestigious venues like Ronnie Scott’s, Royal Albert Hall, and UNESCO International Jazz Day. China received knighthood in the French National Order of Merit in 2023 and is a French-American Foundation 2013 Young Leader.
