Armistice Day

Dozens of world leaders gathered in Paris this weekend for the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day on November 11th, 1918. Commemorating the end of World War I, the ceremony took place at the Tomb of the Unknown Solider at the base of the Arc de Triomphe, followed by the Paris Peace Forum from November 11th to the 13th.
Attendees of the ceremony included President Emmanuel Macron, President Donald Trump, Chancellor Angela Merkel, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and President Vladimir Putin.
Though the ceremony exalted a unity of nations around the globe, it reflected increasing tensions within Europe and across the Atlantic. On Saturday, Presidents Trump and Macron expressed clashing opinions regarding militarization in Europe but agreed on its increased spending in NATO. On Sunday, many interpreted President Macron’s speech about the importance of multilateralism over nationalism as a rebuke of President Trump’s approach to foreign policy. However, both leaders spoke to the value of global peace and the importance of the French-American relationship in efforts to maintain it.
The French-American Foundation assembles French and American leaders to discuss issues of mutual concern for mutual benefit. We believe that open and consistent dialogue leads to peaceful solutions to complex global issues.
