In this compelling book, Yasmina Jaafar explores the lives of five iconic African-American artists—James Baldwin, Nina Simone, Miles Davis, Melvin Van Peebles, and Joséphine Baker—who sought refuge in France from the racial discrimination they faced in the United States. Each of these extraordinary individuals found a unique sense of freedom and opportunity in France, which allowed them to shape their respective fields and influence the global cultural landscape.
