About the speakers:
Roger Cohen has worked for The New York Times for 34 years as a foreign correspondent, foreign editor, columnist, and currently Paris Bureau Chief. In 2023 he won a Pulitzer Prize and a George Polk award as a member of Times teams covering the war in Ukraine. He won a second Polk award in 2024 for work on the Israel-Gaza conflict, and an Overseas Press Club award for an essay on Russia. Earlier, as foreign editor, he oversaw post-9/11 international coverage in a year that The Times won seven Pulitzers. Prior to joining The Times, he worked for The Wall Street Journal and Reuters. He is the author of five books, including a family memoir entitled “The Girl from Human Street: Ghosts of Memory in a Jewish Famiy,” and the recent An Affirming Flame: Meditations on Life and Politics. He has taught at Princeton and Indiana University Bloomington, and was a Fisher Family Fellow at Harvard’s Belfer Center. His work has been recognized with the 1994 Overseas Press Club of America Burger Human Rights Award for his investigation of torture and murder at a Serb-run Bosnian concentration camp. In 2017, he was awarded the Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) prize for Opinion writing for a series on Australian mistreatment of refugees. He won the same award in 2018 for a piece about the Rohingya crisis in Burma. In 2021, Mr. Cohen received the Légion d’Honneur from the French Republic – France’s highest order of merit – for his work over four decades. Raised in South Africa and England, an Oxford graduate, he is a naturalized American.
Stéphane Dujarric is the Spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres. He was appointed to this position in February 2014 by the previous Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon. As Spokesperson, Mr. Dujarric provides information to the global media on the activities of the Secretary-General and the entire United Nations system, through daily live-streamed briefings, official statements, media interviews and off-the record conversations. He and his team advise the Secretary-General and other senior UN officials on their media interactions, and coordinate interviews and briefings with media outlets around the world. Mr. Dujarric began his career with the United Nations 22 years ago as an Associate Spokesperson. After serving as chief spokesperson for former Secretary-General Kofi Annan from 2005 to 2006, he led communications teams in senior roles across the UN system. As Director of News and Media, he oversaw the UN’s television, radio and photo operations, and as Director of Communications for the United Nations Development Programme, he helped to tell the UN’s story around the world. Prior to joining the United Nations, Mr. Dujarric worked for ABC television news for almost ten years as a journalist and producer in New York, London and Paris. Born in France, Mr. Dujarric is a graduate of Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service in Washington DC.
