Policy Breakfast with New York City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer.
Scott M. Stringer, the New York City Comptroller, serves as the City’s Chief Financial Officer. The Comptroller is responsible for safeguarding the fiscal health of the City, rooting out waste, fraud and abuse in City government, and ensuring the effective performance of City agencies in serving the needs of New Yorkers. Mr. Stringer is also the investment advisor, custodian, and trustee of the City’s $190 billion pension funds, and is responsible for protecting the retirement security of over 700,000 New Yorkers.
As Comptroller, Mr. Stringer has focused on bringing more accountability and transparency to the pension funds, and has launched initiatives to increase the participation of Minority and Women-Owned Businesses seeking to do business with the City. As part of this effort, the Comptroller issues an annual report grading each City agency’s spending with M/WBEs, and appointed the City’s first Chief Diversity Officer.
Notably, Mr. Stringer and the NYC Pension Funds led a trailblazing effort to consider diversity when deciding whether to hire investment firms to manage pension funds, and he is leading the Boardroom Accountability Project to help diversify corporate boards.
Mr. Stringer was elected Comptroller on November 5, 2013 after serving for eight years as the Manhattan Borough President. He was born and raised in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan and lives with his wife, Elyse, and their two sons, Maxwell and Miles, in Manhattan.
