The French-American Foundation hosted a Zoom webinar on Thursday, June 4 at 1:00pm ET with Dr. Marcia Chatelain, Provost’s Distinguished Associate Professor at Georgetown University and Young Leader ’15, to discuss the protests across the US against police brutality and racial inequality. The event was moderated by Lorrie Fair Allen, Chief Program Director at the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project and Young Leader ’18.

Marcia Chatelain: Marcia Chatelain is a Provost’s Distinguished Associate Professor of history and African American studies at Georgetown University. The author of South Side Girls: Growing Up in the Great Migration (2015), Chatelain is a scholar of African American life and culture. In 2014 she organized her fellow scholars in a social-media response to the crisis in Ferguson, Missouri, entitled #FergusonSyllabus. #FergusonSyllabus has led to similar online initiatives and has shaped curricular projects in K–12 and university settings. A frequent public speaker and consultant to educational institutions, Chatelain delivers lectures and workshops on inclusive teaching, social movements, and food justice.

Lorrie Fair Allen: Lorrie Fair Allen is the Program Director for the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project, whose mission is to invest in African youth to keep themselves and their peers safe from HIV. After extensive field work living in rural South Africa, she joined the team based in Los Angeles and currently manages all grants the foundation makes to community-engaged organizations in Southern Africa.
